Debunking Skincare Myths

There are so many myths about skincare that people believe in and follow. Nobody stops to see if those are even true. To have clear radiant skin is everyone’s goal but to get there you will need to figure out what information is real and what is not.

A lot of the skincare products that people usually use are either ineffective and some skincare myths can even have bad repercussions. Some of the common skincare myths are as follows:

Myth: not washing your face causes acne

A lot of people are not aware that hygiene is not the cause of acne. Acne happens due to the oils produced by the skin, bacteria, clogged pores, and inflammation. Hormones and stress are the bigger triggers of acne.

Myth: only teenagers get acne

Acne does not just happen to teenagers. It occurs at all ages. Granted, it makes its first appearance during the teen years, but that happens because the body undergoes several changes and these changes in the hormones trigger the production of oils that causes acne.

Myth: eye creams don’t do anything

In fact, an eye cream can have many benefits if it contains the right ingredients required for your skin type. It also depends on your condition, for example, if you are dealing with under eye dark circles and puffiness, then eye creams that contain caffeine as the active ingredient will help reduce the puffiness and dark circles. Other ingredients- like vitamin C and hyaluronic acid will also help combat dark circles and puffiness.

Myth: you don’t need retinol until the age of 50

Retinol is gaining popularity because it works on the production of collagen. It also regulates the production of new skin once the dead skin falls off. It actively treats acne, unclogs pores, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, and works on evening the skin.

Myth: there is no need for sunscreen in winter

People often relate sunscreen with summer and often forget that the sun is all year round. A lack of heat does not necessarily protect you from the harmful rays of the sun. Despite being cloudy or foggy the UV rays of the sun can even penetrate the clouds and damage your skin. That is why it is very important to apply sunscreen every day! The UV rays cause fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation; it rapidly increases the process of aging, and sunscreen protects the skin from it.

Myth: The harder you exfoliate the skin the better

Exfoliating too many times can actually do more harm than good for your skin. Exfoliating once a week is more than sufficient. Giving your skin time to regenerate is also important, that is how one gets a natural glow.

Myth: Laser facials can adversely affect the skin

No, lasers do not harm your skin. They only penetrate 1-4 mm of the skin. They only treat the surface layers of the skin. In fact, the gentle heat from the laser applied to the epidermis stimulates the production of collagen and elastin replacing the old damaged skin cells. This is how laser gives a rejuvenating effect and reduces wrinkles and fine lines, making the skin look plump, soft, and smooth.
